I have no voice for singing,
I know I cannot preach,
I have go gift for music,
I know I cannot teach...

I have alot of friends who are very talented, some sing so well that they have a band of their own, some dance very well - they have dance groups and organize shows, some write beautifully, some have a flair with the brush...

So as i was having a chat with a friend, who himself is musically gifted!...i thought out aloud, how untalented I am....I cant sing to save my life, i learnt Kathak(an indian dance form, from North of India) for 5 years..but it was aeons ago and now i can only appreciate dance...i hv 2 left feet i feel most of the times, i love to paint...it's a wonderful form of expression and i would like to learn some more...i tried my hand at pottery once...but never could pursue it...so what am i left with..i dont think anything!

What makes a person talented? is it when they excel at something, when their work is appreciated by all...when their creation receives recognition? It's probably a mix of all this...

My parents, esp. my mom has always been keen to make me learn new things, be it crafts, knitting, music, dance, painting, pottery...she has definitely tried to make me learn...but i hv never been able to do justice to the training i have received...never been able to appreciate the time and energy that was devoted to make me learn these things...

so i wonder what it is that i am good at...if not the obvious things...there has to be something i can do...
after alot of deliberation, i realised i am I am one of those people who is just about mediocre in some things, but is really not a master at anything at all...
it's alright, i dont mind being like this, I am not a perfectionist, but it would be nice to have something which I could proudly say, yes I can do this, for I know I am good at it!....

    Hey Megha,

Here's a thought... You spent years of your life and lots of money developing the skills you needed to get a good job. Why? Because you believed (and were probably taught from a very early age) that developing those kinds of skills are necessary to live a happy, independant, prosperous life.

Since the development of your professional skills was so important to you, I'm guessing you made yourself do what it took to get them, even if it wasn't always fun.

But when financial independance isn't at stake, where does the motivation come from to develop one's self further? I'm still working on the answer to that question myself, but I do have an idea about what can DEmotivate us to reach our full potential...

When we choose a goal we like, and that goal is difficult to reach quickly, it's easy to become discouraged and give up quickly IF all we do is focus on reaching the goal. It's important to enjoy the path we must follow to reach our goals.

For example, let's say I want to learn how to draw (sketch). Maybe I admire a famous artist and want to be able to draw as well as the artist does. When I begin, what I draw will look like crap compared to famous artist's work. That's because I don't value the steps it takes to become as skillful as I want to be, I want to be skillful NOW (or 'soon', whatever that means). Bottom line: I'm not patient, nor do I properly value (limited) skills I posess now.

The truth is that even the lousiest sketch has great value because it's an expression of the person who created it, and every person has great value. The real trick is learning to value what we create (and thus have FUN creating)each step of the way. If we can do this, then sketching will be fun right from the start.

I think that this principle applies to most any skill there is, from strumming a guitar, to plinking around on a piano, to spritzing around the (living room) dance floor.

  9. I think I need to put a disclaimer here first, I wasnt trying to get people's attention here, and have them talk about my qualities...I was
simply thinking how I have tried my hands at various things, but never
been able to comfortably say, Ok so I am good at this, and i know what i
    create people will enjoy!

@ Shahid, how could I forget scrabble...beating Sammy at scrabble sure needs talent, so i am talented :D

@ Big R, rajat i can only cook so many things, I cant bake at all...so
there we go...i really knwo things half way only...and i dont knwo any one thing so well that i can call myself talented in that realm...

@ Jeremy, Jeremy i know when u say that as long as we enjoy doing something, and it's an expression of what one believes or thinks, that it is fine. But Jeremy that is not talented, If I sketched Random drawings, which only I could understand or appreciate, yes I would enjoy it, but I dont think it would make me talented. Like in Rajat's example, if I hashed up a bunch of things to create "food" and no one ate it, then that doesnt make a good cook, does it?

@ Arjit, Thank u arjit, yeah maybe I can count writing as a talent of mine :) I am loving this experience of writing, and it's great to get back to it

    Here's my 2 cent's....
Everyone in the world is talented. However
only 1% of the total world population can recognize true talent and make them
    successful.
The good side of this satistics is that you are in the top 1% of this world population.
The bad side is you have just not met your 1% yet. Or......umm........maybe you have started meeting some of them on this blog.....

  12. my dearest megha,

You are perfect the way you are. I always tell (you know who) how fortunate we are to have met such a sweet person like you...

There is something in everyone that makes them special...and it need not necessarily be singing/dancing/teaching/preaching...it could just be the sweet and patient nature you have.

And like I always tell you...MEGHA B(h)ANSAL...You are the BEST(h?)

  14. all these wonderful comments summed it up before i cud even start writing one.
yup...everyone has a talent..it might take u ages to recognize it/them. But i guess it all starts with the gut feeling of yours where u LIKE doing something the moment you take it up. e.g. if u took to drawing and u liked doing it, no matter how bad ur sketches might turn up the first few times, just sticking to doing it over and over again is going to make u better at it...and you're sub-consciously gonna try to perfect the art....cos you're ENJOYING it and not doing it for the adulation or any other reason (hopefully!) to start with.

anyways, coming to you meg, i've always told u u write well...and you're one of the sweetest people i've ever met, apart from ur other qualities that set u apart...stop feeling like this and go explore ur other talents girl :)
